“what’s in the heavens, what’s at your feet” is an improvised audiovisual performance developed in Max/MSP/Jitter that uses sampled music, speech, and archival imagery to investigate the relationship between memory and the overconsumption of digital media. In this piece, fragmented speech and processed sounds are syncopated into evolving rhythms and frozen into time-stretched ambience to both decontextualize and fuse the samples into one evolving texture. Grappling with the growing dominance of virtual experience, this performance aims to obliterate the source media with distortion in an attempt to extract its underlying emotional impact.
BIO
Lola Constantino is a multimedia composer and filmmaker based in New York City. Interested in collage and its ability to collapse time and experience, she creates narratives using bits of media she encounters, transforming her personal archive of digital experiences into abstract audiovisual works. Lola thinks of sampling like memory recall: fragments of life out of context, sometimes remembered slightly off or fused together. Growing up a computer kid, her work reflects on how constant exposure to digital media from a young age has shaped her understanding of memory and blurred the line between physical and virtual life. Her work relies heavily on improvisation and is guided by both visual and sonic feedback. Lola releases electronic music under DIMENSION 0.
